Book titles for summer reading are below. Although there is not an an assignment, scholars are expected to have read and annotated their assigned book before the first day of school.
- English I, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The dystopian novel explores the life of Guy Montag who works as a fireman--one who burns books and enjoys his work-until he meets a young girl who makes him question his profession and the values of the society in which he lives.
- English II, Under the Feet of Jesus by Helena Maria Viramontes
Contrary to the title, the novel presents a powerful vision of the lives of the men, women, and children who feel as though they have been oppressed, both internally and socially in California's fields as migrant workers.
- English III, The Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell
Malcolm Gladwell systematically examines the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He poses the question: what makes high-achievers different? His response is the theory that success is based on several factors including culture, family, generation and upbringing.
